The clubs are shorter, the heads are lighter, the lie angles are set for a shorter swing arc and the grips are thinner, so the club can be squared without fighting it. Japanese courses do keep a few loaner sets behind the counter, but they are usually one size, frequently already out, and almost never a matched set — which is why visiting women golfers so often end up playing a round with borrowed men’s irons. Ladies clubs are shorter, lighter in both head and shaft, built with a higher launching loft and fitted with thinner grips. The shaft flex is softer (L flex in Japan specs) to suit a swing speed around 65–75 mph. Playing a men’s set instead usually costs distance and control, not just comfort.
